The Ming Period (769 – 1054 AH)

Islam held a special place in the eyes of the rulers of the Ming dynasty, who facilitated its expansion into the interior regions of China. Their respect for the religion was such that some sources hint at their conversion to Islam. The Ming period witnessed the construction of a large number of mosques. The existence of numerous Islamic buildings dating from the period is an indication of the diffusion of Islam in the provinces of Khubi, Khenan and Ankhui in the interior western China. During this period, in the northwest, as well, the number of Muslims in Knasu province, especially in the Lanju region, was increased, and a particular group by the name of Salar was granted permission, as a Turkish-Muslim ethnic group, to migrate to the province of Tsinghai, where they still reside today.
